MORNING WORKSHOPS

                        9:00 am 12:00 pm

C1:  Coyote and the Shadow People: Trickster as Liminal Archetype
Alistair Martin-Smith, PhD

Coyote is a liminal archetype, a mediator who is betwixt and between the supernatural and the world of the people. The myth of Coyote will be shared and explored though storytelling and dramatic enactment, highlighting the trickster archetype and the narrative of the hero’s journey.

C2:  "I Want Them Back!" Exploring Bereavement Through the Myth of Orpheus
Vincent Dopulos, RDT, MA, LPC

The myth of Orpheus embodies the desire, so often expressed by people in bereavement, to have the person who died back again. Through our physical and vocal exploration of Orpheus we will attempt to more deeply understand this desire and its outcomes.

C3:  Attachment & Attunement in the Acting Space: Pushing Boundaries with Sexual Offenders
Lisa Merrell, MA, RDT, LCAT
Travis Merrell, MA, RDT, LCAT

We invite our clients into the acting space into which they bring their shame, resistance and anxiety about the future; we bring possibilities and the promise of change. Pushing boundaries with those who have violated boundaries, we ask them to explore the liminal space between being offender and non-offender.

C4: Proof is in the Pudding: Translating Your Work Into Numbers
Paige Dickinson, PhD, RDT/BCT

The space between knowing the healing power of the arts and proving it can seem like a vast crevasse. This workshop will help participants begin bridging the gap by exploring how quantitative research methods can be implemented into clinical practice without changing the creativity of the work.

C5: Trapped in the Liminal Space: What are We Doing in Acute Psychiatry?
Carlos Rodriguez, MA, RDT/BCT, LCAT
Barbara Bornmann, MA, MA, RDT, LCAT

How do we define drama therapy outcomes and interventions, and integrate them into the treatment plan in acute psychiatry? This didactic and experiential workshop builds on our DT repertoire by exploring the practice and possibilities of drama therapy through discussion, brainstorming, and enactment of treatment team interviews based upon written treatment plans.

C6: Participatory Filmmaking and Social Justice, With a Dash of Drama Therapy
Michelle Baer, MA
Pamela Snell, MA

This experiential workshop explores the successes and challenges of cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural practices through the examination of the pilot project, “Unwrapping the Sweets,” conducted in Ghana, West Africa. Participants will gain hands-on experience applying techniques of participatory video with an emphasis on social justice in therapeutic work.

MORNING SHORT WORKSHOPS (A)

                          9:15 am   10:40 am

C7: Empathy and the Playspace: When the Liminal Space is Unplayable
Jennifer Wilson, MA, RDT, LCAT
Cecilia Dintino, PsyD, RDT

When the playspace feels remote and impossible, do therapists collude with the client in avoiding it? Two DvT practitioners explore ways in which the restricted playspaces of clients inhibit our own playspaces. We explore new vehicles for finding and deepening empathy to help keep our playspaces expanding, flexible and durable.

C8: Daring to Play: Drama Therapy with Inner City Youth in an After School Drama
Kimberly Jewers-Dailley, MA
Mira Rozenberg, MA, RDT

Inner city youth are rapidly fluctuating between safety and danger, life and death, hope and despair. How do drama therapists work with this population? Is it beneficial to dramatize the serious realities facing inner city youth? This presentation explores the experience of a "Drama Club” through the Post-Traumatic Stress Center in New Haven, Connecticut.

C9: Expose Yourself!
Samantha Peller, MA, RDT

Are you married?  Do you have kids?  Therapists are often asked to "expose" themselves to clients.  Through discussion and experiential explorations, we will explore whether or not certain boundaries should remain intact or if exposing vulnerable parts of ourselves may actually strengthen the therapeutic relationship.

MORNING SHORT WORKSHOPS (B)

                         10:50 am   12:15 pm

C10: Permeable Boundaries: Towards a Critical Collaborative Performance Pedagogy
Nisha Sajnani, PhD, RDT

This paper presentation offers drama therapists an original approach to thinking about the boundary between the audience and the stage in performances that purport to effect change amongst those who bear witness: the audience. This presentation proposes that change becomes possible when this boundary is more permeable.

C11: The Invitation
Jennifer Johnson, MA, RDT, LCAT
Talia Galowitch, MA, RDT

In the treatment of clients who have survived significant interpersonal trauma, how can therapists present a "Continuum of Invitation" to the liminal space of play, drama and creativity while honoring that, ultimately, it is the client who invites the therapist into his or her world?

C12:  Puppeteers Without Borders
Dina Kaplan
This workshop will discuss Puppeteers Without Borders workshops in small communities, schools and hospitals using puppets, masks and creative play to explore critical social issues often considered taboo.
